Archive for ‘Comics’
Once more I must apologise for the dearth of updates. The biggest reason apart from rhe usual RL situations is that comics are no longer a fun hobby anymore. It’s become a stressful hobby that feels like work. I used to draw comics just for fun, and just for me. I thought I could recapture that with Laiyu as an illustrated novel with less art involved, but I quickly became obsessed with its perfection early on in development (I’m still going to do that story, but it’s going to be delayed; it probably won’t begin until ’16-’17).
So what can I do to recapture the fun? Well, I think the main reason that caused me to lose the fun to begin with was that I started to believe my work was good enough to publish. And that made me obsess over perfection, which only caused unnecessary stress.
So I believe that in order to find that spark of inspiration and enjoyment, I need to step away and do something that I will not- cannot- publish. So I’m going to do a short graphic novel on my iPad. The art & comic apps I use (Procreate & Strip Design) are incapable of saving work at high enough resolutions for print (eapecially Strip Design, but other comic apps capable of high res don’t have as many features). Since I can’t publish it, I don’t have to worry about getting it ‘just right.’ Plus the less accurate nature of drawing on an iPad will force me to stay loose plus shrug off certain mistakes.
This will be just for fun, just for me. Oh, I’ll still post it, but don’t expect my best.
SO what will this comic be about? Well, it’s loosely inspired by one of my favourite video game franchises: Harvest Moon. It’s about a 16 year-old city girl named Chloe who moves to her aunt’s farm for the summer. A light-hearted slice-of-life with some teenage drama thrown in. I’d like to name it ‘Rabbit Farm’ in Latin, but I’m not sure whether that would be Lepus Firmam, Ager Lepus, or Cuniculus Rus. So, anyone out there who knows Latin, I need a bit of help. I only know un peu de Français; I have no Latin.
So… no Eryl updates for a month, huh? I’m feeling very much mired on the next page. It’s partially completed, but I’ve just got a block on it. But that doesn’t mean I’m sitting by idly! For a long time now, I’ve been wanting to redraw all of the beginning of this comic, up until the point where I came off of the three-year hiatus and the art style made a dramatic shift.
Therefore, over the next months/ years I will be slowly redrawing the prologue and first chapter in-between working on current pages. I will be skipping around doing my favourite and/or easiest scenes first. Some of the dialogue and narration will change, but there will not be any dramatic scene rewrites like in Raven’s chapter. No complaints, please! What I post online is a continuos work-in-progress, and when I’m not happy with part of my work, I like to fix it.
I have already redrawn the first page of the prologue, and it has replaced the original first page in the archives. The original first page is now in the ‘old pages’ section of the gallery.
Until I get unstuck on page 04-17, I will be redrawing the ‘wolves among sheep’ scene from the first chapter and will replace the original in the archives once those eight pages are done.
Heya, everyone! Those of you who have been around for at least a couple years may know that I sometimes work with Tiffany Ross, usually as a colourist for her comic, Shivae! Vas. Well, as a thank you for helping her over the years, she gave me a cameo featuring Ka the wyvern in Shivae! You can read Shivae here! Ka’s cameo begins here in the archives.
If you’re wondering why Ka has scars not seen in his apearance in Eryl’s prologue, I won’t tell you. I’ll leave you wondering if it’s because he survived the explosion, or if I felt that he would just look more badass in Shivae if he had some maiming. Which is it?? THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW.
I am planning to get back to working on Eryl soon. I also have the rough sketch done of the next Ashes page. Buuuut right now I’m ill and feverish again. I went a whole THREE WEEKS without getting sick and thought I had those viruses licked. :C
In nerdy news, I got a PS Vita! If you want to add me as a friend, just comment here. I’ve mostly been playing Ecolibrium and Tearaway, but have sampled other awesomesauce games like Little King’s Story, LittleBIG Planet, and FFX HD. After being all Nintendo for my entire gaming life, I am blown away by the graphical quality of the Vita. However, the library’s quite small and mostly male-oriented. While I do enjoy a good action game, I’d rather not have oversized breasts hanging out all over. And the rear touch pad- while a neat concept- is annoying. I’m always touching it while I hold my Vita, meaning that in games like Tearaway that use it a lot, I’m constantly triggering things I didn’t mean to. It just feels cramped to hold the Vita without touching it.
I posted this on the Ashes page, but since more people check this page, I’m reposting it here, too.
All right, for anyone who actually checks the Ashes page still, I know updates have been more than sluggish and dropped to nonexistent. Mostly this was because I was working on Ashes as a novel, leaving little energy for it as a comic. I read through the 6 1/2 chapters I’d written last night… and was not impressed with myself. I think it has a lot of raw potential, but it was definitely not professional grade. I think I’m going to put away writing for a while until I have the health to take some college writing courses. For now, I’m going to concentrate on the comic versions of my stories. I’m much better at comic scripting at this point, so I’m going to try to update both Eryl and Ashes soon, or at the end of Chapter IV of Eryl, I will take a break and do a couple chapters of Ashes. I still owe Daemonschile’s full cameo, which will appear with the next page!
